VA HIMSS is lucky to have very talented individuals who are willing to volunteer their time. We have included short biographies on each member so you may get to know them better.
President: Keith Perry
Keith has over 30 years of information technology experience. He currently serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Carilion Clinic based in Roanoke, Virginia, where he leads the alignment of information and technology services with the overall strategic objectives of the organization.
In addition to Information Technology, Mr. Perry also leads Clinical Engineering and Health Information Management under the Technology Services Group. Prior to joining Carilion Clinic, Mr. Perry served as Administrator of Technology Services for the University of Virginia Health System. There he led the Information Services team for the Medical Center, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, University Physicians Group and Health Sciences Library. He previously served as Vice President and Associate Chief Information Officer for Hospital Partners of America.
Mr. Perry received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC, and his master in health administration and master in business administration from Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, NC. He is a member of the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the College of Health Information Management Executives (CHIME). He also serves as president-elect of the Board of Directors for the HIMSS Virginia Chapter and sits on the Technical Advisory Committee for the Center for Medical Interoperability.Keith.email@example.com
Immediate Past President: Cherie Pardue
Cherie is the Chief Information Officer at American Hospital in Dubai - United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to Dubai, in her short time as Deputy CIO at Adventist Healthcare, she was integral in implementing the Adventist HIE. She just transitioned from the CIO at Children’s National Medical Center where she developed and led the technology strategy for the organization. Under Cherie’s guidance numerous clinical applications were adopted, including EMR Solutions (CPOE, Physician and Nursing Documentation, Pharmacy, ED and Surgical Systems) and technology platforms were implemented. Mobile BYOD, Email and Network OS Upgrades, Disaster Recovery, network assessments and Security programs are examples. She conceived and implemented the Clinical Informatics Support Center to: ensure tight integration between technology and clinical workflow, and aid clinicians in timely and accurate problem resolution, education and support. Prior to Children’s National, Cherie spent over twenty years leading large scale project implementations and consulting for non-profits and law firms and has leveraged her marketing background as Director of Product Management/Marketing for several .com’s guiding their product launches. Cherie has a degree in Information Technology from the University of Canberra, Australia. Since arriving in America over 20 years ago as part of the Australian Foreign Service to head the Embassy of Australia’s Information Technology Initiative, Cherie is now a citizen of the U.S.A. and has enjoyed travelling around the United States of America discovering it’s diversity. President-Elect: Leigh Williams
Innovative healthcare business leader transforming health information technology (HIT) to improve healthcare business processes, gain accuracy in health data capture, and successfully operationalize a response to governmental mandates for improved quality in healthcare. As administrator of business systems at the University of Virginia Health System (UVAHS), Leigh heads the financial information systems, ERP information systems, business applications development, and mobile applications development departments. Leigh lectures across the nation on how to engage physicians in change initiatives, EHR work flow optimization, revenue cycle process improvement, and on current issues in HIT. Long connected to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), Leigh teaches a master's degree course on Healthcare Reimbursement Methodologies and Financial Management at UMMC's School of Health Related Professions. Through 2015, Leigh collaborated with physician leadership at UMMC to develop a business of medicine curriculum for the Systems-Based Practice competency for residents at UMMC. Founder of the Mississippi ICD-10 Collaborative, Leigh also provides ICD-10 transition training as a community service to physicians and their support staff. In 2014, Leigh partnered with Dr. John Showalter to found Propel Health IT offering educational seminars to health information technology innovators on how healthcare providers and executives think, act, and make decisions. Leigh is a registered health information administrator (RHIA), a certified professional coder (CPC), a certified professional in healthcare information & management systems (CPHIMS), an AHIMA approved ICD-10-CM/PCS trainer and ambassador, a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, and is certified in Epic EHR Professional Billing. Past-President, Secretary: David E. Stewart
In the spirit of the Triple Aim, David assists healthcare and physician organizations in accelerating digital transformation to drive outcomes and to develop innovative solutions to improve quality of care and patient satisfaction using data-driven population health management strategies. He currently serves Healthcare and Enterprise Clients in the Mid-Atlantic area for Sirius Computer Solutions. A dynamic professional with strong communication and authentic relationship building skills, David shares his knowledge and experiences on transformation, change management and healthcare information technologies at regional and national conferences. A veteran of diverse provider settings who understands the healthcare ecosystem, David has implemented technology solutions for large provider organizations throughout the United States with a focus on clinical, business, organizational and digital transformation through the effective application of technology. He has led four large-scale integrated comprehensive process redesign and margin improvement engagements resulting in $28M to $100M in documented improvement. David holds a B.S. in business administration from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has trained extensively at GE Crotonville. He is currently pursuing dual MicroMasters in Digital Leadership and Digital Product Management at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business. David is past-president and secretary of the Board of Directors for Virginia HIMSS. McRay Simmons is a Healthcare Business Development Manager for Zones, Inc. and is responsible for healthcare accounts in NC, SC, and VA. Residing in Fuquay Varina, NC, McRay has been married to Cathy for 35 years and they have 2 children and 8 grandchildren. McRay has 31 years of success and expertise in Healthcare Technology and Services and is recognized by his customers for his integrity, work ethic, and consistently viewing their business through their eyes. Kim is currently a Technical Program Manager with Anthem and has over 30 years in the healthcare industry including positions within physician practices, hospitals, healthcare systems and payer environments. She has received her MBA with a concentration in Project Management as well as her PMP and CPHIMS certifications and was awarded her HIMSS Fellow in 2013. The last 20 years have been primarily in the Healthcare IT Industry involving IT implementations and management. Kim has a proven track record of successfully working with cross functional teams and creating a collaborative environment amongst the team members. She excels in working with business owners to find areas where they can reach an economy of scale of resource allocation to project task deliverables in order to have minimal impact daily operational activities. Past President: Matt Curtin
Matt is Director, Business Strategy with Impact Makers, a Management Consulting firm and certified 'B Corporation'. Over the past 8 years, he has held roles on both payer- and provider-sides, specializing in leadership and client relationship management.
In his current position, Matt works closely with Senior Leaders and Executives to craft creative solutions for IT challenges in the Healthcare and Commercial arenas.
Prior to Impact Makers, Matt was Client Services Vice-President at Divurgent, an Account Manager within TEKsystems’ Healthcare Services division, an Analyst with Mercer Health & Benefits in their Washington, D.C. office and a Data Analyst in The University of Virginia Medical Center’s Perioperative Division.

Past President & Organizational Liason : Kyle Fredette, MBA
Kyle is the General Manager for Winthrop Resources Corporation's Mid-Atlantic Region. Winthrop is a Technology Finance / Leasing firm that focuses on long-term client relationships.
Kyle started his career as a technology engineer at CMS Information Services working with clients such as Fairfax County Public Schools and the Missile Defense Agency. Next, as an Account Lead at Novus Consulting Group he headed up relationships with such clients as the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Naval Marine Corps Intranet, and Disney Worldwide Services. Most recently, in his role at Ascom U.S., Kyle sold on-site wireless solutions to Healthcare clients such as Carolinas HealthCare System, Rex Healthcare and Johns Hopkins HealthCare.
At Winthrop, he is proud to be a VHHA-endorsed (Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association) partner and serve as the Judges Chair for the Virginia Healthcare Innovators' Health Information Technology Award. Kyle also serves on the board of the Virginia / DC HFMA (Healthcare Financial Management Association) Chapter as Programs Chair-Elect.
Kyle graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelors of Arts in Mass Communication and a Bachelors of Business Administration in Computer Information Systems. Chapter Advocate & HIE Liaison (CAR) / Past President: Terri Ripley, BS, MIT, PMP, CPHIMS, FHIMSS
Terri Ripley, Chief Information Officer, OrthoVirginia is an energetic Health IT leader with 30 years of achievement leveraging technology to implement solutions leading to direct improvements in both patient healthcare and operating efficiencies. She is a talented thought leader with a reputation of success within the health IT community through exceptional communication, presentation and motivation skills. Terri serves the Commonwealth of Virginia as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Governing Body of Virginia’s Health Information Exchange, ConnectVirginia. Terri is a HIMSS Fellow, serves as the Chair of the HIMSS Chapter Advocacy Roundtable, is past president of Virginia HIMSS and currently serves as Chapter Advocate and HIE Liaison for Virginia HIMSS.
Terri received her undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Lynchburg College and her Masters of Information Technology from Virginia Tech. Prior to joining Inova, Terri was a Principal Consultant with Impact Makers assisting hospitals with the management or projects including the implementation of Epic and achievement of Meaningful Use. Prior to this she spent 26 years with Centra Health providing strategic planning and oversight for Centra’s application systems, community health information exchange. Terri is passionate about implementing solutions to improve the delivery of healthcare and also finds time enjoy family and friends. Jay is charged with business development for Communications Specialists’ Health Care division. Communications Specialists has over 25 years’ experience of satisfying the many special requirements for hospital communications, life safety, security and workflow process systems. Education Chair: Jonathan DeShazo, PhD, MPH
Dr. DeShazo is currently an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics at VCU. He earned his PhD. in biomedical informatics and MPH in Health Services Research at the University of Washington in addition to possessing over ten years of design and project management experience in the software industry and five years of clinical experience as a nurse. His primarily research area is developing innovations in user-centered information technology supporting health decision-making. Dr. DeShazo has served in various research roles including principal investigator and co-investigator on grants funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, DHHS, Massey Cancer Center, and privately sponsored applied informatics research with the goal of improving health outcomes through patient centered information technologies. As Associate Director of the Biomedical Informatics Core within the VCU Center for Clinical and Translational Research, Dr. DeShazo also leads a multidisciplinary team producing cutting edge research informatics infrastructure and providing data services for VCU and VCU Health System. Tom is Senior Vice President of Sales and Emerging Markets at SyCom Technologies. He is focused on solution development and sales for vertical markets, data center solutions, managed services, and customer briefings. Tom has also invested in SyCom and serves as a partner and member of the executive team.
During his 20-year career, Tom's primary focus has been on vertical markets, including healthcare, assisted living, legal, retail, and public sector. Prior to joining SyCom, Tom held a number of sales and sales management positions at Gambro Healthcare and then spent nine years at Cisco Systems where he was a major account manager of the year and Northeast United States Business Development Manager for the Healthcare Vertical Sector. In 1998, as Cisco's second healthcare sales manager, he worked solely with hospitals and his efforts have led to several healthcare best practices being published by Cisco.
In 2007, Tom joined Packet360 as Director of Sales and developed the sales consulting group specializing in vertical markets and advanced technologies. Packet360 was recognized as the 164th fastest growing company in the United States by Inc. magazine during his tenure.

Collin is a Healthcare focused Client Executive with Sirius Computer Solutions, supporting customers throughout Virginia. Sirius is a nationally recognized integrator of technology solutions that span the enterprise and lines of business. With a background in problem solving Collin enjoys working closely with senior leadership to align IT deliverables with the organization’s business objectives. Prior to entering the IT field Collin served eight years as an Infantry officer in the Virginia Army National Guard. Mike is a VP, CIO at Augusta Health. Mr. Canfield stepped into his role at Augusta Health System in January 2016. Previously, he was vice president and CIO at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, Ohio. During his time at Firelands Regional, he led a number of initiatives such as bedside medication verification, EHR replacement and computerized physician order entry. Mr. Canfield also actively participated in his local HIMSS chapter and Ohio's health information exchange.

Director, Program Management Office at University of Virginia Health System. Don is a healthcare business leader transforming health information technology (HIT) to advance enterprise and IT program management, optimize business strategy and process improvement, and successfully deliver complex projects that exceed key performance indicators. His business acumen is built on 20 years of experience in healthcare, IT and operations management. As director of the program management office (PMO) at the University of Virginia Health System, Don heads enterprise portfolio/project management and systems engineering by delivering on clinical and operational initiatives that optimize patient outcomes.

Chapter Advocate & HIE Liaison (CAR), Blair Hedgepeth, MPA, CPHIMS, FHIMSS
Government Relations/Grassroots Advocacy/Policy Specialist, American College of Physicians. Senior Associate, Health IT Policy. Blair Serves as lead staff on all health IT policy & regulatory issues. She coordinates and maintains relationships with federal and industry stakeholders to provide a unified focus on health IT. Blair is also responsible for developing all health IT policies and priorities through annual strategic plan and implementation roadmap. She conducts analysis of regulatory and legislative proposals to support College policy.She designs strategic outreach strategies to key federal audiences including CMS, ONC, NIST and others. Blair also provides support for ACP public policy activities related to quality improvement through the use of performance measures, health IT, financial incentives, and patient safety activities. Additionally, she provides lead staff support to the ACP Medical Informatics Committee and contributes her technical expertise and advice to further College initiatives related to clinical data registries, electronic clinical quality measurement, and computerized clinical guidance.
Education Co-Chair, Board Member, Dan O'Malley
Daniel O’Malley is the director of data operations for the University of Virginia Health System. He currently leads a team that manages the enterprise data warehouse, Epic Clarity, the Star data warehouse, as well as the overall enterprise data tier architecture. Prior to his current role, Dan was the director of informatics and business services in radiology at UVa. Dan has spent 18 years in IT and the last 10 years with a distinct focus on reporting and data analysis in various roles in healthcare. This included various aspects such as reporting systems, data warehousing, dashboards, and modern predictive analysis tools.
Past President, Board Member at Large : Reuben Southall, CPHIMS
Reuben Southall Jr., MS CPHIMS, is an accomplished healthcare information technology professional with over 25 years of large academic medical center experience. Of the over 20 years, 13 have been in healthcare information technology leadership roles. Reuben, after being a successful Director of Clinical Applications for 3 years, has been promoted to Associated CIO of Operations effective September 2014. He has extensive system management and implementation experience including 6 major Cerner Clinical Information System installations and upgrades. He currently is responsible for the efforts of over 37 analysts and is a major collaborator in the execution of at least 8 active and clinically significant healthcare information technology projects along with a host of daily system maintenance and enhancement efforts. Reuben is a leader within his organization that is often tasked with leading interdisciplinary problem solving teams that include clinicians, healthcare information technology professionals, revenue cycle staff and health system executives. Past President, Board Member at Large: Laishy Williams-Carlson, CPHIMS
Laishy serves on the CIO Council for Bon Secours Health System as the Chief Information Officer for Hampton Roads, which is comprised of three acute care hospitals, nursing care centers, and ambulatory sites. In addition to her Hampton Roads CIO role, she heads up the BSHSI Enterprise Application Services Division. Laishy will lead the system-wide implementation of BSHSI’s EHR, launching this summer. She has worked in healthcare finance and I.S. for 22 years in various roles, including: Controller, Director of I.S. and Local System CIO. Laishy has attained CPHIMS certification and is a Six Sigma Black Belt. She has held various Virginia HIMSS Chapter leadership roles, including President, President-Elect, Program Chair, and Communications Chair.
Past President, Board Member at Large: Shane Danaher
Shane is Client Services Vice President for DIVURGENT. In this role, he is responsible for developing strategic service offerings, helping healthcare providers understand and follow industry trends, and compete in an increasingly intensive economic environment. Shane brings over eight years of experience to the healthcare technology field and has a proven history of establishing successful relationships with providers and healthcare organizations. Shane's strong technology background combined with a deep understanding of the healthcare market have helped him create solutions for clients that maximize their project successes.
Shane has an Economics degree from Haverford College and an MBA from Virginia Tech. In addition to HIMSS, Shane has been invited to speak regarding industry relevant topics, such as Meaningful Use, to other professional organizations including MGMA, AAHAM, Workshop on Health IT and Economics (WHITE), and regional physician groups. Colin is the founding Partner of DIVURGENT, and was previously an Associate Partner / Client Services Leader with IBM Global Business Services. He has 18 years of healthcare technology, business operations, organizational leadership and clinical experience. He is a Registered Pharmacist graduating from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and possesses an MBA in Health Services Management from Old Dominion University. Scott is the Chief Operating Officer at Windancer Technologies, Inc. He has over 25 years of experience in Information Technology, Financial and Clinical Systems Implementations and clinical and operational leadership. He is PMP® certified and a Six Sigma Black Belt graduating from Old Dominion University with a BS in MIS and George Washington University with a Master Certificate in Project Management.
